In this article we will learn what does Uhr<\/strong> <\/em>mean in German? The concept of ‘Uhr’<\/strong><\/a><\/em> (O’Clock in English) is a time-telling word from German.<\/span>
\nGerman uses numbers from 1 to 24 to denote time, and it counts from midnight to midnight (i.e., 24). While 5 am is referred to as ‘F\u00fcnf Uhr,’<\/strong>.<\/em> 1 a.m. in the midnight is referred to as ‘Ein Uhr’.\u00a0‘Zehn Uhr’<\/em><\/strong> is 10 a.m., while ‘Zw\u00f6lf Uhr’<\/strong><\/em> is 12 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n

The time expressions do change starting at 1 in the afternoon, though. In the same way as 1 p.m. (13 o’clock) is ‘Dreizehn Uhr’<\/strong> <\/em>and 6 p.m. (also 18 o’clock) is ‘Akhtatzehn Uhr’<\/strong>.<\/em> ‘Zwei<\/em> und- Zwanzig Uhr’<\/strong><\/a> refers to 10 p.m. (at 22 o’clock) and ‘Vier und- Zwanzig Uhr’<\/strong><\/em> to 12 a.m. (at 24 o’clock) in the midnight.<\/span><\/p>\n

In German, ‘<\/em>Halb’<\/em><\/a><\/strong> is the word for ‘Half an hour.’<\/strong> Half of four, or three and a half, is pronounced as ‘halb Vier’<\/strong><\/em> in German. Similar expressions include ‘halb F\u00fcnf’<\/strong><\/em> for 4.30 and ‘halb Akht’<\/strong><\/em> for 7.30 ! However, half past one (1.30 p.m.) is referred to as ‘Dreizehn<\/a> Uhr<\/a> drei\u00dfig<\/a>‘<\/em><\/strong> (13. 30) and half past eleven( 11.30 p.m.) is referred to as ‘Dreiundzwanzig<\/a> Uhr drei\u00dfig’<\/em><\/strong>(23. 30).<\/span><\/p>\n

The word ‘Viertel’<\/a><\/strong> is used to describe the idea of a ‘Quarter’<\/strong><\/em>. Quarter before seven is referred to as ‘Viertel vor<\/a> Zieben’<\/strong>,<\/em> and quarter after nine is referred to as ‘Viertel nach<\/a> Neun’<\/strong><\/em>. While ‘Vor’<\/strong><\/em> means ‘Quarter to’<\/strong>; ‘Nach’<\/strong><\/em> implies ‘Quarter past’<\/em>.<\/strong><\/span>
