Let’s have a look at ‘Family’<\/em> and ‘Family members’<\/em> in German in this post. In German, family is referred to as ‘Familie’<\/em> <\/strong>or ‘die Familie’.<\/em><\/strong> Like Mother, Father, Sister, Brother, Aunt, Grandfather, and Grandmother in English, family members are also addressed differently in German.<\/span><\/p>\n

‘Mutter’ <\/em><\/strong>and ‘Vater’ <\/em><\/strong><\/a>are the German words for mother and father, respectively. Son is called ‘Sohn’<\/em><\/strong> and daughter is called ‘Tochter’<\/em><\/strong>, whereas sister and brother are referred to as ‘Schwester’<\/em><\/strong> and ‘Bruder’<\/em><\/strong>. ‘Junge’<\/em><\/strong><\/a> is the name of the boy, and ‘M\u00e4dchen’<\/em><\/strong><\/a> is the name of the girl. Grandmother is referred to as ‘Gro\u00dfmutter’<\/em><\/strong> or ‘Oma’<\/em><\/strong>, whereas grandfather is referred to as ‘Gro\u00dfvater’<\/em> <\/strong><\/a>or ‘Opa’<\/em><\/strong>. In German, parents are referred to as ‘Eltern’<\/strong><\/em>, and grandparents\u00a0as ‘Gro\u00dfeltern’<\/strong><\/em><\/a>! A child is referred to as ‘Kind’<\/strong><\/em> and children are ‘die Kinder’<\/strong><\/em>, while a baby is simply referred to as ‘Baby’<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

‘Verwandte’<\/strong><\/em> <\/a>is the German word for relatives. <\/span>Uncle is referred to as ‘Onkel’<\/strong><\/em>, while aunt is called ‘Tante’<\/strong><\/em>. The in-laws are referred to as ‘Schwiegermutter’<\/strong> <\/em>that is mother-in-law and ‘Schweigervater’<\/strong><\/em> <\/a>which is father-in-law. In German, ‘Schw\u00e4gerin’<\/strong><\/em><\/a> refers to a sister-in-law and ‘Schwagar’<\/strong><\/em> to a brother-in-law. Nephew is called ‘Neffe’<\/strong><\/em>, whereas niece is called ‘Nichte’<\/strong><\/em><\/a>. Here, we must remember how we treat our friends just as we do our family. A male buddy is referred to as ‘Freund’<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, and a female friend as ‘Freundine’<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

All feminine nouns, such as Mutter, Gro\u00dfmutter, and Schwester, are pronounced with ‘die’<\/strong> <\/em>preceding them like ‘die Mutter’,<\/strong><\/em> while\u00a0 masculine words are pronounced with ‘der’<\/strong><\/em> like ‘der Vater’<\/strong><\/em>, ‘der Gro\u00dfvater’<\/strong><\/em>. But M\u00e4dchen, Baby and Kind are pronounced as ‘das<\/em><\/strong> M\u00e4dchen’,<\/strong> ‘das Baby’ <\/strong><\/em>and ‘das Kind’<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
