Let’s look at the German names for days and months.<\/span><\/p>\n

In German, day is called as ‘Tag’<\/strong> <\/em>or ‘Tagen’<\/strong> <\/em>for days. Monday and Tuesday are known as ‘Montag’<\/em> & ‘Dienstag’<\/em><\/strong> (Deens-taag) respectively, while Wednesday is called as ‘Mittwoch’<\/em><\/strong> (Meett- vokh)(Mitt<\/em> denotes middle & Woch<\/em> means a week, indicating that Wednesday is the middle of the week). ‘Donnerstag’<\/strong><\/em> is the name for Thursday. Friday is known as ‘Freitag’<\/strong> (Fray-Tag),<\/em> while Saturday and Sunday are known as ‘Samstag’<\/strong> ( Jams-Tag)<\/em> and ‘Sonntag’<\/strong>( Jon-Tag)<\/em>, respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n

Let’s move on to learning the names of the months now that we are familiar with the names of the days.\u00a0 The German word for month is ‘Monat’<\/em><\/a><\/strong> and ‘Monate’<\/em><\/strong> (Monat-a) in the plural. January is called ‘Januar’<\/strong>( Yaa-noo-aar)<\/em>, and February is called ‘Februar’<\/strong> (Fe-broo-ahr)<\/em>. March is called ‘M\u00e4rz’<\/strong> ( Mehrtz)<\/em> and April is called ‘April’<\/strong>( Aah-pril)<\/em>. June is ‘Juni’<\/strong> (Yoo-nee)<\/em> and July is ‘Juli’<\/strong> (Yoo-lee)<\/em>. Since the letter “J” in English is pronounced as “Y” in German, January is prnounced as ‘Yaa-noo-ahr’<\/em> and June and July are prnounced as ‘Yoo-nee’<\/em> and ‘Yoo-lee’<\/em>, respectively.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

August is called as ‘August’ (Ow-goost)<\/em>, whereas September has the same spelling as English that’s ‘September’ but different pronunciation in German which is ‘Jehptember’<\/em><\/a>. Here too an important point is that the ‘S’ in English is pronounced like the ‘J’<\/em> in German, which is why English September is pronounced as ‘Jehptember’<\/em> in German.<\/span><\/p>\n

October and November are pronounced exactly the same in English and German, however the English October is spelled as ‘Oktober’<\/em><\/strong> in German.\u00a0<\/span>
\n‘Dezember’<\/strong><\/em> ( Deh-tsem-ber)<\/em> is the name for December, though.<\/span><\/p>\n
