In this post, let us explore the German names for numbers. In German, a number is referred to as ‘Zahlen<\/a>‘<\/a><\/strong><\/em>.<\/strong> German numbers have a variety of names, just like the English digits one, two, and three.<\/span>
\nOne is referred to as ‘<\/em>Eins<\/em>‘<\/strong>, two as ‘Zwei<\/a>‘<\/a><\/strong><\/em> and three as ‘Drei’<\/em>. Four is pronounced ‘Vier’<\/em><\/strong> <\/a>(which sounds like ‘Fear’), followed by ‘<\/em>F\u00fcnf<\/strong>‘<\/em>, ‘Sechs<\/strong>‘,<\/em>‘Sieben<\/strong>‘<\/em>, ‘Acht<\/strong>‘<\/em>, ‘Neun<\/strong><\/em>‘<\/em>, and ‘Zehn<\/strong>‘<\/em>,<\/em><\/strong> for five, six, seven, eight, nine and ten respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n

The numbers 11 through 20 are pronounced as follows in German.\u00a0 Eleven (11) is ‘Elf<\/strong>‘,<\/em> twelve (12) is ‘<\/em><\/strong>Zw\u00f6lf<\/a><\/em>‘<\/a><\/em>,<\/strong> and thirteen (13) is ‘Dreizehn<\/strong>‘<\/em>. Fourteen (14) is pronounced ‘Vierzehn<\/strong>‘<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0 fifteen (15) is ‘F\u00fcnfzehn<\/strong>‘<\/em>, and sixteen (16) is ‘Sechzehn<\/strong>‘<\/em>.<\/strong> Seventeen (17) is known as ‘Seibzehn<\/strong>‘<\/em> while eighteen (18)\u00a0 is ‘Akhtzehn<\/strong>‘<\/em>. ‘Neuntzehn<\/strong>‘<\/em> equals 19 and ‘Zwanzig<\/strong>‘<\/em><\/a> equals 20.<\/span><\/p>\n

The next numbers 30, 40 and 50 are pronounced as ‘Drei\u00dfig<\/strong>‘<\/a>, ‘Vierzig<\/strong>‘<\/em> and ‘F\u00fcnfzig<\/strong>‘<\/em> respectively, whereas 60, 70 and 80 are called as ‘Sechzig<\/strong>‘<\/em>,‘Siebzig<\/strong>‘<\/em>, <\/strong>and ‘Achtzig<\/strong>‘ <\/em>singly. ‘Neunzig<\/strong>‘<\/em> is 90 and 100 is ‘Hundert<\/strong>‘<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The names for twenty-one (21) and twenty-two (22) are ‘Ein<\/strong> und<\/strong> –Zwanzig<\/strong>‘<\/em> and ‘Zwei<\/strong> und<\/strong> –Zwanzig<\/strong><\/a>‘<\/em> respectively. Thus, by adding 1\u00a0to 10 to the ‘Zwanzig<\/strong>‘<\/em>\u00a0, the numbers 21 to 30 can be formed.<\/span>
\nThe same numerals 1 through 10 can also be joined with ‘Drei\u00dfig<\/a>‘,<\/em> ‘Vierzig<\/strong>‘,<\/em> and ‘F\u00fcnfzig<\/strong>‘<\/em>, and still further, to produce 31-40, 41-50, 51-60, and further.<\/span><\/p>\n
