Days & Months in German: जर्मन में दिनों और महीनों के नाम

इस पोस्ट में हम जर्मन भाषा में दिनों और महीनों के नाम देखेंगे। जैसे हम हिन्दी में एक दिन को ‘वार’ (Day) कहते हैं, जर्मन भाषा में एक दिन को ‘टाग’ (Tag) और एक महीने को ‘मोनाट’ (Monat) कहा जाता है। जैसे हिन्दी में दिनों के नाम जैसे सोमवार, मंगलवार, बुधवार और महीनों के नाम जैसे जनवरी, फरवरी, मार्च, जून होते हैं, वैसे ही जर्मन भाषा में भी दिनों और महीनों के अलग-अलग नाम होते हैं।

अब आइए ‘टाग’ पर नजर डालें जिसका जर्मन में अर्थ होता है ‘दिन’। जर्मन में सोमवार को ‘मोंटाग'(Montag) और मंगलवार को ‘डिनस्टाग’ (Dienstag) कहा जाता है। बुधवार को ‘मिटवोख’ (Mittowch)(‘मिट’ का अर्थ है मध्य और ‘वोख’ का अर्थ है सप्ताह यानी सप्ताह का मध्य यानी बुधवार) और गुरुवार को ‘डॉनरस्टाग’ (Donnerstag) के नाम से जाना जाता है। शुक्रवार के लिए ‘फ्रायटाग’ (Freitag) और शनिवार और रविवार के लिए क्रमशः ‘जामस्टाग’ (Samstag) और ‘जोंटाग’ (Sonntag) हैं।

दिनों के नाम जानने के बाद, अब हम अपनी यात्रा को महीनों के नामों की ओर मोड़ते हैं। तो ‘मोनाट’ का अर्थ है महीना। जर्मन भाषा में जनवरी को ‘यानुआर’ (Januar) और फरवरी को ‘फेब्रुआर’ (Februar) कहा जाता है। मार्च को ‘मेर्ज़’ (März-Merz(eng)) और अप्रैल को ‘आप्रील’ (Aapril)।

जून और जुलाई को क्रमशः ‘यूनी’ (Yuni) और ‘यूली’ (Yuli) बोलते है (जर्मन में अंग्रेजी के ‘जे’ को ‘य’  उच्चारित किया जाता है)। इसलिए जनवरी को ‘यानुआर’ और जून और जुलाई को क्रमशः ‘यूनी’ और ‘जुली’ कहते है। अगस्त को कहते हैं ‘आउगुस्ट’ (Aaugust) और सितंबर को ‘जेप्टेम्बर’ (September)। यहां यह ध्यान रखना जरूरी है कि अंग्रेजी के S को जर्मन में ‘ज़’ उच्चारित किया जाता है।

अक्टूबर और नवंबर या महीनों को क्रमशः ‘ऑक्टोबर’ (October) और ‘नोवेम्बर’ (November) ही कहा जाता हैं। दिसंबर का उच्चारण ‘डिट्ज़ेम्बर’ (December)  किया जाता है।

Let’s look at the German names for days and months.

In German, day is called as ‘Tag’ or ‘Tagen’ for days. Monday and Tuesday are known as ‘Montag’ & ‘Dienstag’ (Deens-taag) respectively, while Wednesday is called as ‘Mittwoch’ (Meett- vokh)(Mitt denotes middle & Woch means a week, indicating that Wednesday is the middle of the week). ‘Donnerstag’ is the name for Thursday. Friday is known as ‘Freitag’ (Fray-Tag), while Saturday and Sunday are known as ‘Samstag’ ( Jams-Tag) and ‘Sonntag’( Jon-Tag), respectively.

Let’s move on to learning the names of the months now that we are familiar with the names of the days.  The German word for month is ‘Monat’ and ‘Monate’ (Monat-a) in the plural. January is called ‘Januar’( Yaa-noo-aar), and February is called ‘Februar’ (Fe-broo-ahr). March is called ‘März’ ( Mehrtz) and April is called ‘April’( Aah-pril). June is ‘Juni’ (Yoo-nee) and July is ‘Juli’ (Yoo-lee). Since the letter “J” in English is pronounced as “Y” in German, January is prnounced as ‘Yaa-noo-ahr’ and June and July are prnounced as ‘Yoo-nee’ and ‘Yoo-lee’, respectively. 

August is called as ‘August’ (Ow-goost), whereas September has the same spelling as English that’s ‘September’ but different pronunciation in German which is ‘Jehptember’. Here too an important point is that the ‘S’ in English is pronounced like the ‘J’ in German, which is why English September is pronounced as ‘Jehptember’ in German.

October and November are pronounced exactly the same in English and German, however the English October is spelled as ‘Oktober’ in German. 
‘Dezember’ ( Deh-tsem-ber) is the name for December, though.
